Predator Free Wainuiomata is now up and running with over sixty rat traps and boxes delivered. We are selling the traps to recycle the money to purchase more traps and materials to build further traps. Central Wainuiomata (urban area) and rural Moores Valley/Coast Road are the gap between the trapped areas surrounding - we need to join the dots develop a halo.
We have divided Wainuiomata into suburb areas for easier trap and data management seven areas in total. The Wainuiomata Natural Heritage Trust has been formed to assist with fund-raising, banking and providing a legal identity for the project.
We are planning for 280 traps per year in urban areas totaling 1400 traps over five years. 400 traps a year for the rural areas will total 2000 traps over five years.
We have liaised with the other main groups trapping around Wainuiomata Hills and our intentions are to link up trapped areas over time:
- East Harbour Environmental Assn (MIRO) are in the hills behind Eastbourne with traps coming down into Wainuiomata just above the residential area of Fernlea.
- Remutaka Conservation Trust are trapping in the western hills to protect the burgeoning kiwi population in the park.
- Greater Wellington Regional Council is operating in the Water Catchment Area and Wainuiomata Recreation Reserve.
- Brookfield Predator Free are in the north west end of Moores Valley.
- Baring Head Trust are trapping the area of south Coast Road.
