Our group was formed in August 2017, We had been inspired by the work being done in bringing back the native birds in the northern Wellington suburbs and felt we could do the same in the leafy western hills of Lower Hutt. We have approximately 120 homes with traps within our group and in addition there are many other homes that have been controlling pests, some for over 30 years, We have new people coming on board with the group and it is a means to link together our community. We have also received a grant from Kiwibank which has helped us provide lower cost traps to our people.. We come together with the other local groups and have meetings and talks during the year. Through this we learn about enhancing the native wildlife through trapping.and restoration of habitat.
More recently we have been made aware that the Capital Kiwi Project (bringing Kiwi back to Wellington) will be relying on us on the western hills to hold back the reinvasion of predators into their kiwi zone. This has added even more significance to what we are trying to achieve.
