Whitemans Valley is home to many native birds that are the envy of other areas of the region, such as miromiro (tomtit), kahu (harrier), karearea (NZ falcon), kiwi, and titipounamu (rifleman). Pest Free Whitemans Valley aims to trap the Valley’s possums, stoats, weasels, rats, and mice, so that these species, and others, can thrive. Whitemans Valley backs onto the bush areas of Wainui, including the Wainuiomata Island, which is an area of pristine podocarp forest. Wellington has Zealandia as a source of native species to resettle the area, and Whitemans Valley has Wainuiomata Island: right next door!
We are already seeing great results and an increase in local birdlife. However, we need many more residents to trap for pests on their property. Contact us to find out how you can join in.
We can also advise on pest plants, and in particular, Old Man’s Beard.
Pest Free Whitemans Valley is one of the project groups of Pest Free Upper Hutt. It is run by local volunteers, and urgently needs more locals to join in running the project as a community.
